Efficient use of electric power

10 types of advice on the RATIONAL USE OF ELECTRIC POWER

1 - Isolation

The loss of heat can be prevented by suitable isolation of the residential building. By unsuitable isolation you can lose through the walls up to 35 % of heat, and through the roof up to 25 %.

2 - Heating

Heat all your rooms at the temperature that suits you the best; however, do not exaggerate. Learn how to use the thermostat. If the rooms are too warm, do not open the windows, but lower the temperature on the thermostat. If you lower the temperature only by 1°C, your costs of electric power will decrease also by 10 %.

3 – Warm water

Isolate the boiler and set the temperature on the thermostat at the maximum level of 60°C. Instead of bathing in the bath, use the shower, since in this way you will use less water.

4 - Lightning

In the rooms where the lights are frequently turned on it is sensible to use economical lights. Even though they are expensive, their life expectancy is 15-times longer than the regular lights.

5 – Household utensils

When you are purchasing new electric apparatus, decide for the purchase of energetically economical household apparatus. The latter are equipped with an energy label, which is marked with the letters from A to G. The apparatus in the energy group A use approximately half less electric power than the apparatus in the group D, and up to 75 % less than the apparatus in the group G.

6 – Laundry washing

If you wash your laundry at 40°C instead of 60°C, you will use one third less electric power. When you have smaller amounts of laundry, use economical washing and washing with less water usage.

7 – Refrigerators and freezers

Regularly de-freeze the refrigerators and freezers. Do not leave the door of the refrigerator open longer than necessary (to take out or put in food). Try to cool the food before you put it in the refrigerator.

8 – Heating of water

For the heating of water use water heaters (tea kettle) which bring the water to boil faster and with better energy efficiency than if you heat water in regular dishes. Always heat only the amount of water that you need; therefore, use the heaters with marked amounts of water.

9 - Cooking

When you cook, always cover the dish with a lid, since in this way you lower the condensation. When you cook vegetables use only so much water to cover the vegetables. You will save up a little also by using the microwave oven instead of a regular oven.
